barbaresco vineyards

At Scarpa, we want to craft elegant wines of great longevity. For this purpose, we chose the town of Neive for producing our Barbaresco wines. The land of Canova is within the borders of the town of Neive, one of the four allowed villages to make Barbaresco wine.

This portion, as the town of Neive itself, is on the border between the Langhe and Monferrato, and bears heritage from both. This very vineyard, located on the hill facing the town on the way to the Monferrato town of Coazzolo, provides perfect conditions for nebbiolo grapes to ripen well.

Topograhy & Soil

Located right in front of the town of Neive, the vast majority of the Canova vineyard faces West while only a tiny part is fully East facing. Between 250 and 300 metres above sea level, these steep slopes – together with a mixed, well-balanced soil – make a perfect habitat for Nebbiolo grapes.

In our Canova vineyard, the soil is rich in clay and limestone which is ideal for effective water retention and for balanced ratio of silt and sand. This type of soil, also featuring calcareous marl, is typical for the best terroirs of Barbaresco.
