A VINEYARD HERITAGE BETWEEN LANGHE AND MONFERRATO

Did you know that Scarpa cultivates more than 30 hectares of vineyards between Monferrato and Langhe?

A vineyard heritage that winds from the Poderi Bricchi estate in Castel Rocchero and continues to the hills of Barbaresco and Barolo. These are property vineyards which we have planted with native Piedmontese varieties that are most suitable to the characteristics of the terroir.

Poderi Bricchi was acquired in 1969. A splendid a single-body vineyard stretching for 25 hectares on the highest point of the hill, divided into two by the farm road that crosses it. This acquisition was revolutionary: while numerous wineries continued to vinify grapes harvested by their intermediaries, Scarpa chose to be responsible for the quality of its wines, starting from vineyard management. This awareness led to the creation of masterpieces such as La Bogliona and I Bricchi: legendary single-vineyard Barbera d’Asti wines with exemplary potential for aging. Today, Poderi Bricchi is also home to native Monferrato varieties that are vinified into monovarietal labels: Ruchè, Brachetto, Dolcetto, Freisa, Moscato Bianco and Timorasso.

The Langhe vineyards are a more recent acquisition. These have become part of Scarpa’s vineyard heritage to create excellent wines that originate from the area’s outstanding Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive (MGA), known for their remarkable history, vocation and quality. In Neive, on the hills of Barbaresco, we cultivate the Canova MGA, a vineyard that stretches over a panoramic ridge that, from Bricco di Neive, descends to the plain, right across from where the town begins. The soil – rich in clay and limestone and revealing some silt and sand – yields broad and fragrant Barbaresco wines with remarkable tannic grit.

On the hills of Barolo, Scarpa has two outstanding vineyards: Monvigliero in Verduno and Roncaglie in La Morra. The former is one of the most esteemed vineyards in the eastern area of the denomination, capable of yielding wines endowed with exceptional finesse. Monvigliero will soon give rise to a single-vineyard Barolo that is currently concluding aging in the cellar. The latter is a renowned cradle of harmonious Barolo wines revealing perfect balance between power and freshness, vigor and grace.
