Nestled on the northern hillsides of the appellation of the "King of Wines", Barolo, Monvigliero stands universally recognized as the "Grand Cru" of this region, epitomizing the expressive finesse that has made Verduno wines famous worldwide. Monvigliero is a natural amphitheater, basking in a southwestern exposure where the exceptionally dry climate and light, loose soils help the vines express their finest qualities.
Scarpa's vineyards in Monvigliero span two hectares in the municipality of Verduno. Here, we primarily grow Nebbiolo for our Barolo DOCG Monvigliero.
One of our most sensational wines, Monvigliero is a challenge, a partnership where we explore the noblest and most long-lived soul of Barolo with our distinctive attention to the natural propensity of the grapes. Distinct, slow, and expressive vinification allows us to achieve an elegant structure and unparalleled expressive finesse: an authentic expression of the best of the appellation!
But Monvigliero isn't solely about Nebbiolo: a portion of our vineyard is dedicated to Pelaverga—a native black grape variety from Piedmont, on the brink of extinction after the phylloxera epidemic but revived by local winemakers in the latter half of the twentieth century, from which we produce our Verduno Pelaverga DOC.
Smooth and fresh, with pleasant hints of rose and white pepper, its light tannins make it ideal for youthful consumption and for the warmer months of the year.
